Wagah Border

For viewing the impressive daily ritual of the Flag-hoisting and Flag-lowering ceremonies at Pakistan-India border, it is worth making time and traveling on G.T. (Grand Trunk) Road for 30km to Wagah, which is a border crossing between Lahore and Amritsar in India. The Flag-lowering ceremony, which takes place daily before sunset is a must see event. The best time to go there is on weekends when families from all over the country including some foreign tourists are gathered to watch the spectacle. The ceremony is performed by Pakistani soldiers in all their official glory and receives spontaneous applause from the audience. The ritual comprises a handshake between an Indian and a Pakistani soldier, followed by efforts to out-shout and out-salute each other and at the same time stomping with vigor to show patriotism and military strength. The blowing of trumpets and the march past add to the colorful ceremony.

If you take a cab from the Mall Road it’ll cost around 600 Pak rupees for the return journey plus one hour waiting time. The Tourism Development Corporation of Punjab also conducts tours to the border. There are also a couple of small shops at Wagah selling travel guides, cold drinks, snacks and tea. Few travelers stay over night at the PTDC motel which also allows camping on site in just Rs.100 per person including car park and use of their washrooms. The hotel also has a restaurant which is quite convenient to just chill out if you have time to kill.

On the whole it is a unique and thrilling event much enjoyed by people on both sides of the border.
