Lahore Museum

Lahore Museum’s glorious edifice stands on Shahrah-e-Quaid-e-Azam, previously known as The Mall Road, opposite the 100-year old Allama Iqbal Campus of South Asia’s famous Punjab University. It is in fact Pakistan’s largest museum and one of the most noted of the East.

The museum’s grand entrance, framed by a white marble portico provides the accent to this picturesque Anglo-Mughal ensemble. This architectural edifice expresses geometric purity in its formation of square corner cube-like towers with curved domes, providing an interesting interplay of light and shade in the strong sun of the Punjab.

.Internally, the museum presents one of the most exciting architectural spaces designed to set off the valuable displays. The museum has about 20 galleries with items dating back to the Stone Age. There are rarest Buddhist collections not present any where in the world and also many valuable Mughal, Sikh and British collections. A regal bronze statue of Queen Victoria which was cast for her diamond jubilee in 1897, is one of the most attractive displays among the British collection. The famous Gandhara gallery showcases Mahayana Buddhist religious sculptures. Mahayana Buddhism originated and flourished during the first five centuries of the Christian era. The showcases present the life story of Buddha in frieze panels and statues from his pervious incarnations, his birth, youth, enlightenment preaching of the law and death. Other displays include pottery, jewelry, manuscripts, a rare collection of ancient Greek coins, miniature paintings, carpets, musical instruments, armory, and all sorts of artifacts from the ancient Indus valley civilization (considered world's second oldest civilization after Egyptian civilization) as well as from the Islamic Period.

The museum is as much a must see for its unique collection as it is for its architectural excellence.
