Badshahi Mosque
With the simple grace of its lines, its magnificent proportions and airy spaciousness, the mosque, represents the very best of Mughal architecture and design. It was constructed under the Mughal emperor, Auragzeb in 1674 and is one of the world’s largest mosques. It has a vast open court yard (which is said to hold almost 100,000 people) with four tapering minarets of sandstone at each corner, three majestic marble domes and a monumental gate at the top of a broad flight of steps. A square marble fountain stands in the centre of the courtyard. Eighty cells (hujras) built into the walls were originally study rooms. The British demolished them in 1856 and rebuilt to form arcades. The rooms near the entrance contain ancient Islamic relics, including the hair of the Prophet Muhammad, as well as 30 embroidered Korans (holy book). The mosque looks especially lovely at night when it is illuminated.
With special permission you can climb to the top of one of the minarets for an excellent bird's eye view of the mosque, the fort opposite & the old city of Lahore. Admission is free, as it is a mosque where prayers are held. But if you don't want your shoes to get stolen (you can’t wear them inside), you'll have to pay a nominal fee to a porter at the door.
Near its steps, lies the tomb of Allama Iqbal, the poet-philosopher of the East. The mausoleum is constructed entirely of red sandstone and is visited by many people.
Visitors should dress appropriately if they plan to visit the mosque as it is the same mosque that caught international attention in 1991. The then Muslim religious leaders had protested the arrival of late Princess of Wales because her skirt was considered too short!
